About & independence
Buying or leasing Alaska halibut & sablefish IFQ is a five- and six-figure decision — but the pricing is opaque. Each broker lists its own current asks, keeps no history, and has no reason to show you what other brokers are asking or what quota actually sold for. So most people price quota by calling around and trusting word of mouth. Quota Index pulls the public listings into one place, by regulatory area, and keeps the record those listings don't.
We don't broker quota. We don't take listings, charge sellers, or earn a commission on any sale — so we have no reason to talk a price up or down. The index is just the public numbers, aggregated and kept honest: cross-broker medians by area, the confirmed sale prices the brokers themselves publish, an anchor to NOAA's official ex-vessel value, and a daily price history. See exactly how the numbers are built ›
Spot an error, or want another area, fishery, or broker covered? Reserve a spot and tell us what you need — we expand coverage based on what participants actually ask for. The current index, the price-history archive, and the value calculator are all free.
